Travel nõuandeid ja hoiatusi Austria
Tourism Tourism forms an important part of Austria's economy, accounting for almost 9% of the Austrian gross domestic product. As of 2007, the total number of tourist overnight stays is roughly the same for summer and winter season, with peaks in February and July/August.
In 2007, Austria ranked 9th worldwide in international tourism receipts, with 18. 9 billion US$. In international tourist arrivals, Austria ranked 12th with 20. 8 million tourists.
Vienna attracts a major part of tourists, both in summer and winter. Salzburg receives about a fifth of tourist overnight stays compared to Vienna, which ranks it 2nd in the summer season. In the winter season, a number of winter sport resorts in western Austria overtake Salzburg in the number of tourist overnight stays: Sölden, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Ischgl, Sankt Anton am Arlberg, and Obertauern.
Traditons Think of Austria, and - at least as a foreigner - you will think of Lederhosen, traditional Dirndl dress and the Alps. Today′s tourism Mafia has done little to change about this thinking, and so the international image of Austria is a rather romantic one. Nonetheless, it is certainly the case that there are many traditions and customs in my country that are ancient, yet active part of the everyday life in Austria.
Climate The climate in Austria is widely continental with the Eastern edge of the country stretching into the Pannonian climate zone. It is typical for Central Europe with cold winters (going down to minus 20 degrees Celsius during the night) and hot and sunny summers (going up to 35 degrees Celsius during some days in August). For Americans: this means that winter lows and summer highs range from about 0 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The coldest months are January and February, the hottest July and August.
Cuisine Austrian cuisine is a style of cuisine native to Austria and composed of influences from throughout the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. Regional influences from Italy, Hungary, Germany and the Balkans have had an effect on Austrian cooking, and in turn this fusion of styles was influential throughout the Empire.
Austrian cuisine is most often associated with Viennese cuisine, but there are significant regional variations.
Language The Languages of Austria include German, the official language and lingua franca, Austro-Bavarian, the main language outside Vorarlberg, Alemannic, the main language in Vorarlberg, and several minority languages.
Shopping Holidays are never holidays without a bit of shopping, so visitors will be delighted by the many large malls, small souvenir shops and splendid shopping streets across Austria. Go bargain hunting at one of the many colourful markets, stroll along an upscale shopping street, or indulge in some serious shopping at 1000m above sea level.
Costs As well as being in the centre of Europe, Austria is also in the middle range in terms of prices.
Since joining the European Union, basic food costs have increased in line with those in the rest of the European Union. The products available in Austria originate from all over Europe.
Currency As a member of the European Union, Austria is also part of the Economic and Monetary Union – which introduced the EURO as the common currency.
